Can you use your phone as a hotspot while connected to Wi-fi

If you landed on this article, then you probably found that your Wi-Fi connection turns off when you turn the Hotspot feature on your phone on to share WiFi via Hotspot.

This then forces you to switch to mobile data when you want to use your phone as a mobile Hotspot.

It makes it seemingly impossible to use your phone as a hotspot to use Wi-Fi at the same time as Hotspot, without using mobile data.

The reason for this is that often mobile phones only have one Wi-Fi transceiver (Radio) with one channel. It can either be used to connect to Wi-fi, or to use your phone as a hotspot. It cannot do both at the same time.

Therefore, you are prompted to turn off your Wi-Fi connection and switch to mobile data when you are connected to W-Fi while trying to activate your mobile device’s Hotspot feature.

Some phones do have Dual Wi-Fi technology.

Those will typically have a 2.4GHz channel and a 5GHz channel. If your device has dual channel Wi-Fi it will have the ability to use one channel to connect to Wi-Fi and the other channel to be used as a hotspot.

How to share Wi-Fi from mobile to mobile

These are your options if you do not have a phone with dual W-Fi, and you want to share Wi-Fi data from a mobile phone to another mobile phone without using cellular data.

Bluetooth Tethering

The easiest solution to this is to use Bluetooth tethering.

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi can work at the same time.

Bluetooth tethering works like a Wi-Fi hotspot, but instead of trying to connect to the hotspot with Wi-Fi, you connect with Bluetooth.

This way, the phone that is connected to the Wi-Fi can stay connected to it, while using Bluetooth to use it as a Hotspot.

This will work to connect your PC, Laptop or phone to the phone’s Hotspot. That is of course if the device that you want to connect to can tether by Bluetooth.

To find out how to do it, we explain Bluetooth tethering in more detail in our article How To Use Another Phone To Boost Wi-Fi Signal.
